CHAPTER TEN

Candy

The energetic beat of classic rock pulls me from sleep. My bedroom is a cozy cave of darkness. I stretch, but am met with fluffy resistance. My fingers tingle where they’re trapped underneath me and have been for a while.

I swear I sometimes sleep like a human tilt-a-whirl, spinning and spinning until I’m encased in a cozy little blanket burrito.

While cozy, it’s hot, given the blazing summer outside. With fumbling movements—it takes me a while to wake up, and without coffee in my system, I’m still a mess—I manage to unwrap myself. I slip out of bed and sway like a baby giraffe in one the nature clips Trevor and I have been sending back and forth. With a dramatic fling of my arms, I send the blackout curtains wide.

The late morning sun greets me with a warm kiss on my cheeks, and I smile back, even as I squint. That’s what sunshine is, really, it’s the day’s smile. Mama always said that when I was little to try to get my grumpy butt out of bed. She told me to go greet the day since it was grinning at me. It’s stuck ever since.

The steel guitar blaring from my phone alarm cuts off with a flick of the button; I scroll through my messages to see what I’ve missed.

I’ve got a couple messages from each of the guys this morning. We’ve been in near constant contact since we left the diner.

I coached Trevor through his first date jitters, and Dancer and I had tossed around date ideas. I was pleased as punch to get updates after their date; they’re both absolutely smitten with each other, it’s the cutest thing.

Our conversations have gone beyond that, too. Dancer told me all about his friends. There’s a bunch of them, but he seems close to each and every one. Growing up together will do that.

Trevor and I have swapped industry stories and everything from animal gifs to quiet secrets I’ve barely whispered to Mama. He just has that effect on people.

Last night I had been texting each of them separately, all of us going about our evenings on a rare night off, but when I mentioned I was about to watch a movie, my phone rang with a video call.

The three of us had a little long distance pajama party, each queuing up the movie at the same time to watch it together. We could’ve used a streaming app, but the laughter and teasing each other that came from trying to time things just right made it worth it.

I look back at my phone and smile at the messages. Dancer sent me a sleepy selfie, a coffee cup lifted in a toast to the camera. He sent that hours ago, though; that’s an early morning, even for him.

Trev and I are both night owls. Given our lines of work, it makes sense. You can’t exactly get up at six when you’re rolling into bed at four. Dancer is usually up a few hours before us, but not that early.
